Turkish freighter KARMATE struck, intentionally or not, Greek Navy gunboat ARMATOLOS, at around 0100 UTC May 4 in Mytilini Strait between Lesvos Island, Greece, and Turkish mainland, some 4 nm off Lesvos coast. KARMATE reportedly was warned to change her course prior to collision: “Turkish cargo “Karmate” ignored warnings to change course” says Greek Reporter, but it doesn’t say why was KARMATE warned – was she asked to change course to avoid collision, was she to stop or what?
KARMATE is en route from Izmir to Tekirdag, she was crossing the Strait in northern direction. After collision, KARMATE sailed into Turkish waters and stopped. She was drifting for some time, at around 0610 UTC she started moving towards Dikili port, nearest to her Turkish port in Mytilini Strait.
ARMATOLOS suffered slight damages, understood just scratches. It was more like a contact, than collision.
