Prof. Ali HABERAL. MD;
Director, Başkent University Health Institutes
Başkent University Hospital in Istanbul is a large multidisciplinary medical center at the European level. It is part of a group of 10 Baskent University Hospitals.
Başkent Hospital is also a major center for organ and tissue transplantation. More than 142 heart transplants have been performed here.
Among the most demanded medical services are cancer treatment and all types of surgical operations. Foreign patients in the clinic undergo IVF, kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplantation.
All areas of modern medicine are represented in Başkent Hospital. There are high-tech specialized centers. Every year, doctors treat 7,000 inpatients and 180,000 outpatients. Surgeons perform more than 4,000 complex operations per year.
The first clinic in Başkent began its work as an Organ Transplantation and Burn Treatment Center in 1982 under the guidance of a world-class transplantologist, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal. The founder and president of the Turkish Transplant Society, Haberal was the first in the country to perform a kidney transplantation from a living donor, a liver transplantation from a deceased donor, and segmental liver transplantation to a child from a living adult donor.
The liver transplantation program has been operating since 1988. To date, 698 liver transplantations have been successfully performed at the Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation. The donor of this organ, in most cases, are relatives of patients.
Most often, liver transplantation is performed in children with a congenital disease called atresia (absence) of the biliary tract (20%) and in adult patients with severe hepatitis B (57%). In children, the 5-year survival rate after liver transplantation in Başkent Hospital is 90% and the 10-year survival rate is 81%. In adults, the 5-year survival rate is 79.3% and the 10-year survival rate is 74% (data taken from an article in the international journal Transplantation).
With the help of the computerized Monaco Treatment Planning System and the unique Elekta Access linear accelerator, radiologists perform all radiotherapy options. This treatment is possible for all types of cancer. Doctors use Gamma Knife radiosurgery to remove brain tumors. This radiation gives a chance for recovery with minimal side effects from radiation therapy.
The main direction of the pediatric cardiac surgery department is surgery for congenital heart defects. Pediatric cardiac surgeons perform 650 operations per year, in most cases in newborns and in the first year of life.
In adult patients, surgeons perform more than 1,000 heart and vascular surgeries every year, including endovascular (without incisions, with the help of catheters) prosthetics of an aortic aneurysm. Most operations are minimally invasive interventions with a short rehabilitation period.
IVF in Başkent Hospital in Istanbul
In the IVF Center, men and women from other countries have access to all the most modern methods of infertility treatment. The IVF pregnancy rate is 30-68%, depending on the age of the patient in the range from 18 to 42 years (data taken from an article on the most authoritative medical resource PubMed).
Başkent University Hospital in Istanbul attracts residents from many countries with quality medical services at relatively affordable prices. With high success rates of operations (on a par with European hospitals), the cost of services at Başkent Hospital will be about 30% cheaper.
Başkent University Hospital for foreigners is not only an optimal ratio of cost and result of treatment but also maximum care with comfort for patients.
